    What marketing tools work

We've honestly never had much success with anything beyond word of mouth and people finding us through Google. We do have social media and have paid for ads in the past, but with mixed results. Our social media accounts, as well as email campaigns have worked very well to bring old players back...

How would you handle exploitation in your game?

It depends on the situation. In the example above, if no one really knew it was a glitch and everyone was benefitting from it, I would leave the points in place, fix the bug, and move on. It was our fault it was happening, and it would be unfair to take it away. However, if a few players knew...

Hardest things in building your games community?

HP isn't a new site/developing a community, but I do have some experience with this, haha. HP has a great community. Seriously, they're amazing. And it's one of the things the game is most frequently complimented on. But it wasn't always that way, and I've worked on other games that had a...

    Seasonal Site Events

HP does a lot of seasonal stuff! We do change our layout with the seasons (the background and the color scheme). But we also have some seasonal events that we always do, especially around the holiday season. We do Trick-or-Treating in October, hand turkeys and Cyber Monday in November, 24 Days...

How soon is too soon to open an in development game?

I've done it both ways, and for me it has always worked better to release a more polished game. You should have a few testers who will play through everything and report bugs or make suggestions, but opening to the general public is just asking for trouble in my opinion. A game like this is...

HP Donation Drive and New Layout

Anyone who has been paying attention to the news over the last couple of weeks has seen the devastation all over North America from Hurricane Harvey, the Northwest/Canadian Wildfires, and the looming Hurricane Irma. It's a very scary time for a lot of people who are hoping to stay safe and...

    PayPal Issues

Finally got an update from PayPal and this has been fixed! So, if anyone else has been having issues, it should be resolved now :). Recently, I've been having problems with PayPal, and I'm wondering if anyone else is having the same issues! I've submitted a support ticket with PayPal, but no...

    Google Adsense

When you're setting up adsense, it's their code that's in the <head> tags. Which should be in your header.php file (or whatever you have it named). But when I said this: I meant that I made sure there were links to all of the publicly viewable help pages, information pages, forum, etc...

    Google Adsense

@Kesstryl Specifically that I put links to all of our publics pages that I wanted them to crawl in the header/navigation bar :). You can see what I mean on horsephenomena.com, I linked all of our help pages in the drop down tab.

    Google Adsense

Just noting that I got approved this morning! So, for anyone else needing help, this is what I did: 1. I made sure my SSL stuff was in order. I don't know if this actually helped, but I heard from a few people that it does, so I figured I needed to get it done anyway. 2. I made all of HP's...

What are working on this week in your game?

Finishing up a few odds and ends so I can re-apply for Adsense, and also to tie up some loose ends before I go on vacation (re-write the TOS, send some marketing emails, send the newsletter). Nothing super exciting!

    Selling Pets and Items

I am selling some older art that I bought or had commissioned and never got the chance to use! Details and asking prices for each are listed below. I will consider reasonable offers, especially if you buy more than one of the pieces. All prices are in USD and payment will be through PayPal :)...

    Good server hosts?

Second addition to this, Dream Host. I currently (newly) have just my blog hosted there and so far, so good. Super affordable. I didn't have room on my Liquid Web server anymore for it, and it was cheaper to host just the blog somewhere else than expand my Liquid Web server.

    Good server hosts?

I've heard good things about Bluehost and their shared hosting is super affordable (I think prices range from $5 to $15 per month). I can't personally give a testimonial for them though because I've never used them, but again, I've heard lots of good things! Stay away from HostGator. Their...

    Being a coder?

I can't tell you exactly how different it would be, but even going from one game to another is very different and the logic sometimes flows differently, so I imagine yes, it will be a bit of a jump! I'm an owner who hires out for all of my major programming, and my games are not built on a...

Terms of Service for an indie site?

I would also second that a lawyer should look over it, but I understand that it may not currently be in the budget. My TOS has evolved and changed over the years, and is currently in need of a re-write, but I would just make sure that you understand everything that is in it and WHY behind all of...
