UniCreatures/UniFaction was another one that just got shut down one day. The owner made bad/stupid decisions that alienated most of his player base and when it didn't work out the way he wanted he pulled the plug. I really miss the artwork - I spent tons of USD and time and energy on that site...

I highly recommend @Indy for programming. I've been working with him for a while now and he has been wonderful.

I use multiply for shadows and then overlay or sometimes screen or luminosity (depending on the effect I want) for highlights. Ultimately, there isn't a right or wrong way of shading - it's all purely objective imo.
