  1. Considering this is a “feature” for many pet sites, this might be a heated topic, but here goes: What are your thoughts on breeding animals for profit/appearances? This topic is used to discuss both real world breeding and breeding in pet games. Looking now to games (such as pet games) which I’ve always enjoyed in my youth, I find it difficult sometimes understanding why breeding is such a heavy “feature.” Which in my mind comes down to this: - Animals/pets are bred to have certain appearances. Animals with unique or rare appearances are generally preferred and “worth more.” - Appearances tend to have more worth than personality or skills. - Pets/animals are regularly bred by choice of the user, not naturally breeding at the choice of the pet/animal (aka forced). - Pure breeds are often “worth more” than mixed breed or “base colours.” - Similarily coloured/painted/alternated pets tend to have more worth. Example “winged cat” is better than “base model orange cat.” How is this not abusing the animal/pets? I feel like I no longer understand nor have respect for this practice. Lets discuss. PS, although I have strong opinions for this, I’m not here for any fights. I genuinely would love to hear opinions (conflicting to mine or not) of others on this topic.
  2. Melon Shark is so awesome. Interesting to hear how people are developing characters. It seems most are basing off of other creatures- I mostly experiment in the same way. I might just draw some random shapes that end up with earth-like features (two eyes, two ears, two front legs or arms, two back legs, possibly tail, etc.) Sometimes I add extra legs, etc. but all in all mostly earthen. I have tried drawing alien like creatures but they almost always end up with at least a few earthen features and even then they don't look particularily attractive.
  3. I agree with a lot of the above. It depends on the role, but I'd personally be open to secondary accounts for staff so long as they don't abuse it (i.e., item farming, point transfers, etc.) Sometimes a staff member might just want to play as a regular user to avoid being seen as an "authority," or like HeroKnight mentioned with staff favouritism.
  4. Hey, welcome to The Gaming List! I like your avatar.
  5. Your welcome! I hope you share your progress, I'd be very interested to see where you go.
  6. Nice progress, thanks for sharing! It sounds like an interesting species. From the last picture, it feels a bit awkward to me, possibly due to the fact that it's pretty much floating in space. It gives the impression that it would have more mental/magical attributes than any strength. The drooping pelvis and smaller hind legs also reminds me a bit of the German shepherd, where I'd see it more as a weakness/degradation. If they are meant as climbers, I'd imagine their hind legs/paws might be more evolved as well- maybe slightly longer and flexible. The hind legs in the first image might be a better direction? They definitely look more muscular. Whatever route you go, it's looking great. Sorry if I rambled too much there.. I like the species description you started as well. I'd love to see where you go with the first image.
  7. Again, I feel sometimes it might be best to let the player use their creativity to balance game limits. Be it item amount limits or weight limits. A wise player would carry only the necessities (armour, tools and select foods, potions, etc.) Where carrying only bulky items might leave a player little room to carry other items.. It really does add a touch of realism, I feel. But it's also dependant on how the player actually likes to play the game too. There are some that do battle and others that might be more into collecting/ skill training, etc. and therefore, yeah, probably can carry a lot more items. I wonder if that could be further balanced by combining weight, space and amount limits? I usually favour amount limits over weight limits, but adding weight limits is actually intriguing me now.. :-) With pet/animal companion based games theres also the idea to increase weight limit with the strength of your "pets" adding to the total weight you can carry.
  8. Oh, thanks. :-) The link doesn't seem to work for me. I'm sent back to this post.
  9. That's a good example with Pokemon. However, I think having all items can also work well~ if you are familiar with Rune Factory games, items are all stashed in one location, but still offer a sort option (organize items, list by alphabetical or item type, etc.) @mariell with weight limits, it may be true, however making it so users can only hold a specific weight or even number of items can force them become more creative with what items they choose to carry. Sure you could carry 100 potions, but realistically do you need to?
  10. What kind of contests are these? for which game?
  11. I was just thinking about the best way to develop an inventory system and I thought this might make an interesting discussion. So what style of inventory system do you prefer and why? All-in-one sortable inventories (as in all items drop into the same location, but are sortable based on item type). Inventory split into sections for each item type. Do you prefer unlimited inventories or limited Inventories? For limited inventories do you prefer.. Weight limits Space limits or Amount limits Or perhaps you have other preferences. Please share.
  12. Welcome to The Gaming List, Becki. Enjoy the forums.
  13. Eliyo definitely looks like my type of game (more fantasy based), I plan to join soon. I'll let you know what I think. I work a lot with HTML5/CSS3 stuffs, but also work with jQuery and integrate a lot with classic ASP and sometimes PHP. It does mean collaboration with the backend programmers who often teach me a thing or two. Work has been a bit slow over the summer though, so I'm able to do some learning and proposals in my spare time which is fun. I'm still going over basics (variables, forms, arrays, mailing functions), but it's helping me understand a lot more of the code I've been working with. What sort of languages do you use in your workplace?
  14. I enjoy seasonal events also. Especially autumn, there's so much to do! The colours, the leaves, the smells, the holidays (Thanksgiving, Halloween, Harvest Festival..) Autumn layouts are also a bonus ~ so long as they are not excessive.
  15. Thanks. Nice! I will look into those games. I've worked full time as a designer/front end developer for 5.5 years +.5 years in placement (same position). So 6 years. I'm somewhat working on a project, but more to develop my own skills.
  16. I watched the first few seasons of the Game of Thrones and then lost interest. I may pick it up again, who knows. In truth I don't watch TV very often... HOWEVER in this rare moment (haha) I actually just started watching Season 7 of The Walking Dead. I have been reading the comic book series for a while and noticed that Netflix recently added Season 7. It's interesting to watch how the two similar but quite different stories evolve. I just met with Neegan. He's an awful, but very good character in the books - I'm looking forward to see how his character will develop in the show.
  17. Neat beans. I just auto welcomed myself to the community. Anywhosel, I am Uber. I'm a web designer and front end developer who also works with; social media, search engine optimization and many other things. I'm also currently self teaching myself PHP and MySQL development with special interest in game development. Hi.
